Tall, Dark, and Mysterious

A website. A newsletter. A book. And soon: an e-zine.

Devoted to…eating alone at restaurants:

SoloDining.com is dedicated to supplying you with the information and tools you need to take charge of this all-important slice of life.

I dine out alone - rather frequently as it turns out - and not once in so doing have I ever felt as though I was availing myself of any “tools” or “information”. Nor did I feel as though doing so would have enhanced my meals. Nor, for that matter, did I ever consider myself to be “taking charge” of anything while sitting alone at a restaurant table. In fact, of all of the life experiences about which I have ever thought “Oh, yes, I would like very much for someone to hold my hand through this one“, solo dining doesn’t even make the list. Then again, I don’t claim to be a “solo dining maven”, so. Also, my only objective in eating in a restaurant is to obtain, in a reasonably timely manner, good food that I don’t have to cook myself. Perhaps if I were also interested in being “welcomed warmly” by the restaurant staff, or in “cultivating a restaurant in the hopes of returning”, I might seek out some tips or strategies. But honestly? Serve me good food, and I’m happy.

There’s no shortage of blogs by cranky educators out there, but to the best of my knowledge, there aren’t many by public defenders. Which bodes well for my traffic, because the occasional “If you’re going to try to convince the department head that you know the material, perhaps you shouldn’t tell your instructor that you haven’t done any work in three weeks” doesn’t hold a candle “If you have some miscellaneous drug charge, think twice about clothing with a marijuana leaf on it or a t-shirt with the ‘UniBonger’ on it.”
